Birthdays are always a big deal in my house. I try to make it a big deal for them. Balloons, decorations, home cakes — the works! Not to mention making sure your child gets to celebrate at school too, and obviously your child wants to take those homemade dinosaur cupcakes instead of store-bought cupcakes. You probably give them that amazing birthday party, where they get to invite all their friends over. You ensure you match everything to a specific theme and take extra care to make goody bags for each of the children attending. We do this because we love our children. We love the joy that you can see in their eyes. We love making them feel as special as possible. So tell me when birthdays stop being such a big deal for adults?

I love celebrating my birthday and I love celebrating my friend’s birthdays. We do so much for our children, we shouldn’t allow our own birthdays to be forgotten. I bet you even go out of your way to make your spouse’s birthday special, don’t you?

Mama, you deserve to be celebrated!

Don’t pass over your day and pretend it’s just another day. You are worthy of the same amount of joy and the opportunity to feel loved and special by your friends and your family. You have given so much throughout the past year to deserve one special day for you. Your birthday has so much meaning. Maybe in your family, you are the reason things get done. Maybe birthdays happen because of you. Even if it comes down to you making your birthday special, find some way.

Buy your favorite cake.

Buy yourself a present.

Go get a pedicure and manicure.

Book a massage.

Get a babysitter.

Go for a run by yourself.

Do something that makes you happy.

Don’t play down your birthday. Don’t tell your children that it’s just another day. It’s not. Without your birthday they wouldn’t have a birthday. Don’t play the busy card. You have a whole year to plan this day. Don’t let it be a flop for you. Take this day and make it as big or as little as you want.

My husband threw me a surprise party and it was one of the best birthdays ever. Last year I went on a girls trip around my birthday. I have gone to concerts, celebrated with friends, celebrated with just my family. You name it, I have done it for my birthday. It’s not even the gifts that I love—although I do love surprises. I love having the opportunity to do something for me the same day every year, I look forward to it. I love cake so much, that’s probably one of the biggest things I look forward to. Choosing my fancy cake and not having to worry about my kids liking it or not. I even make sure to buy a bigger cake so I can ensure I have some for breakfast the next morning. I have no shame. I even have a birthday list that I give my husband. As I see something throughout the year that I love, but it’s not a necessity or something I would just buy myself I send it to him. Sometimes he takes a hint, sometimes he misses the hint. Either way, it’s fun and exciting and my kids enjoy giving me gifts- so that’s a win.

So sweet mama. This year, whether your birthday is 365 days away or tomorrow do something for yourself. Big or small, you deserve it. Stop thinking you are not worthy of having the same special birthday you specifically go out of your way to give your kids and spouse. Buy yourself the balloons, buy yourself the flowers, you are worthy of it. You deserve to get to blow out candles on your favorite type of cake. You deserve the party. You deserve to feel special. We work hard as mamas, let’s do something for ourselves on our own special day.
