If you’re anything like me, rules basically went out the window during the holiday season and winter break. As a family, we made many memories, but we also ate way too much sugar and had too much screen time. Instead of focusing on myself this New Year, I wanted to think of easy family resolutions that could help make 2020 our best year yet.

Family Resolution #1: Reduce Screen Time

We all know long stretches of screen time are bad for kids (and adults). This year I’m setting strict rules and time limits as part of our family resolution. My kids are always happier and better behaved when they are screen-free.

Family Resolution #2: Eat Dinner at the Table

I recently read an article that said eating dinner as a family helps children grow their vocabulary, perform better in school, and have lower rates of depression. I would love for my family to eat dinner all together every night, but some times life (work, sports, activities, etc.) get in the way. Our goal is to eat at the table four to five times a week.

Family Resolution #3: Eat More Veggies

This is a no brainer family resolution. We all need to eat more vegetables.  I’m going to try to get my kids (especially my picky son) more involved in this process by letting them pick out which vegetables they would like to try either in the grocery store or at a local farmers market.

Family Resolution #4: Read More

It’s no secret that I love to read. Reading is great for your own mental health, and it’s also invaluable to read with your kids. Depending on the age of your children, reading time will look different for each family. Regardless if you’re reading to your kids, your kids are reading to you, or everyone is reading independently, aim to read for at least 20 minutes a day.

Family Resolution #5: Hit the Beach

Out of town, landlocked friends and family often ask us how much we go to the beach. The somewhat embarrassing answer is, not as much as we should. We are so lucky to live so close to the beach, and it’s something we are going to make a priority as part of our family resolutions.

Have you come up with any family resolutions for 2020?
