Let’s face it, trying to take time for a date is not always easy with kids. When you do manage to get a free evening you probably find yourselves doing the same old dinner and a movie, but why not stray outside your comfort zone and do something unique, memorable, and maybe a little crazy! Grab yourself a babysitter and try some of these off the wall Valentine’s Day date night ideas!

Take to the High Seas

Take advantage of our beautiful coastal town by taking to the water on a romantic evening cruise. There is a multitude of options and departure locations. One, in particular, is Schooner Freedom Charters, St. Augustine’s premier tall ship, which offers sunset sails, a two-hour sail on the Matanzas River with music and beverages available. They have a special Valentine’s weekend package this year which includes complimentary wine, beer and soda and the opportunity to bring your own picnic on board. The prices range from $45 to $65 per person depending on the time of day and whether live music is provided onboard. See full details and purchase tickets through their website. The tour departs from the St. Augustine Municipal Marina at 111 Avenida Menendez.

Other local nautical options are the Black Raven Pirate Ship, an exhilarating and unique pirate adventure. With everything from family-themed cruises to a 21+ evening, “club” themed cruise. Or for dolphin enthusiasts, Dolphin Tours St. Augustine, which offers private charters for 2 to 6 people, with the sole purpose of seeing as many dolphins as possible in their natural environment.

Put on Your Aprons

Years ago I spent an evening with friends at the Publix Aprons Cooking School. We had an absolute blast learning how to cook various dishes from master chefs, sampling each course and enjoying the many wine pairings.  The Publix Aprons Cooking School in Jacksonville, located at the Mandarin Oaks Shopping Center, 10500 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida would make a perfect date night. A full calendar of classes is available on their website. They have a special “Wine and Dine Your Valentine” Valentine’s Day class featuring Smoked Salmon Potato Cakes, Filet Mignon, and a dark chocolate almond tart. The price is $100.00 per couple, which works out cheaper than going out for a regular Valentine’s Day date and is sure to be far more entertaining and memorable.

I hope these ideas inspire you to try something unique this valentines day. For more outside-the-box ideas see last year’s blog post, Putting a Twist on Traditional Valentine’s Day Dates. Have a fun, adventurous and well-deserved night out.
