Hey all! My name is Katee Schalau. Yes, my first name is spelled like that on my birth certificate (my parents were ahead of their time on unique name spellings). And no, I’ve never been able to find a snow globe or keychain with my name on it. I am the proud mother of one boy and find parenting to be a supremely joyful and challenging experience. I love places like St. Augustine Moms where I can find commonality with others, they make me feel less alone and like other people can relate to what I’m going through. I am excited to be a part of the SAM team and start sharing some of myself, and hopefully connect with some of you!
Florida-Raised & Proud of it
A little background about me, my family moved to Florida when I was 3 years old and I was raised in Ponte Vedra Beach. I always loved being able to call PVB my home and St. Augustine was one of my favorite places in the world. In fact, some of my fondest memories are of spending weekends in St. Augustine, driving down Vilano Beach then wandering downtown and eating somewhere delicious (preferably with a view of the water). After graduating from Nease High School, I went on to the University of North Florida and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations. Once I graduated UNF, I moved to the Midwest for a change of scenery and to be closer to a family who had since migrated north.
The Love of My Life
In the winter of 2013, I met the love of my life the day I gave birth to my son. My whole world changed and life gained new purpose as I assumed the role of a first time, single parent to this beautiful creature. As most parents do, many days I walk a fine line between madness and bliss. I try to balance the chaos of everyday life with a resourceful, can-do attitude and a green(ish) lifestyle to keep us both healthy. This mom thing isn’t easy, but it’s definitely the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. To pay the bills, I work full-time from home in marketing, creating content for an electronics manufacturer, which allows me the luxury of being home with/for my son, but it can definitely be a juggling act.
You Can Take the Girl Out of Florida…
After 11 years in the Midwest, I longed to return home to Florida to raise my son in the same place I grew up. I missed everything about home, from the smell of the ocean air to the sweet sound of a Southern drawl saying ‘yes ma’am,’ mossy oaks, fresh seafood and, of course, the sunshine. Months of cold temps and weeks of gray, cloudy skies were downright depressing to me. So, in the summer of 2019, I sold our house and my son and I moved to Florida and settled in St. Augustine. I couldn’t be happier with my choice to raise my son here and I’m looking forward to recreating old memories and making new ones with him. We love to do anything outside where we can enjoy fresh air and sunshine, and our favorite quick getaways include a trip to the beach or a theme park for an adrenaline rush. In my hour or two of spare time each day, I enjoy watching anything and everything on Bravo, shopping online and catching up with friends via text (usually at the same time). I’m super excited to be a part of the St. Augustine Mom team and hope to connect with some of you!
