When I had my first child I really wanted to nurse, but it turned out to be a bit harder than I thought. There were so many products to help with the process and sifting through them all was tough. I thought I had it under control with my second child and then quickly realized there were things I still needed. Here are seven of my favorite products that I kept on hand while nursing my babies.
I don’t think anyone truly prepared me for the chafing that would occur during breastfeeding. After a while, it went away but it was painful in the beginning. I tried several different products but the one I found worked the best was Boob-Ease Organic Nipple cream. Not only did it help soothe the pain and moisturize the chapped area, but it’s also safe for ingestion. At two in the morning, my exhausted brain didn’t always remember to fully wipe off the other products before nursing. This product is organic and safe for both mommy and baby.
Nursing makes you want to eat like a teenage boy. I found myself constantly hungry and in need of a quick snack. Belvita Breakfast Biscuits kept me from being “hangry” and the oats in the breakfast biscuit helped increase my milk supply and energy level.
While nursing, experts say you should drink about 128 ounces of water per day. If trying to remember all the things that come with having a newborn baby isn’t enough, you also need to remember to take care of yourself and your hydration. I found that a good water bottle that kept my water at the right temperature was helpful. Using a straw also assists with drinking water faster. The fact that my bottle had a cute pattern was an added perk for me.
Oh, the back pain that comes with carrying a baby for nine months. It doesn’t go away when the baby comes. Nursing with a Boppy pillow helped give me and my babies the proper positioning needed to nurse comfortably.
Several companies make heat/ice packs that fit nicely into your bra to help ease some of the pain that comes with nursing. Some days my breasts were super engorged and needed heat to soothe them. Other days the cooling sensation on my nipples brought comfort when chafing. Personally, I loved the Bamboobies Soothing Nursing Pillows with Flaxseed, Heating Pad, or Cold Compress for Breastfeeding. They are a soft material and use flaxseed to naturally heat and cool.
A good nursing bra is something you will want to go out and find on your own. I liked something that was not only functional but made me look and feel attractive. I wanted something that made me look good despite the leaky breasts and eye bags the size of Texas and it needed to work under a t-shirt and a dress.
The Breast Shell is a product that goes inside your bra and catches breast milk from one breast while nursing your baby with the other. Breast milk is liquid gold. When people say to never cry over spilled milk they were not referring to breast milk. I used the Haakaa Breast Shell. It is light and fit comfortably in my bra.
During your nursing journey, you will find different products you love. You will also find so many products that are not for you. Do your research and try things out. Just remember to not stress and enjoy the time you have with your baby as a newborn.
